Returning Through U.S. Customs
When your charter returns from The Bahamas, every passenger, crew member, bag, purchase, food item, and special article is subject to U.S. inspection. Good preparation keeps the process orderly, protects your onward plans, and helps the crew coordinate your arrival correctly.
Passengers must remain with the arrival process and follow crew and CBP instructions until a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer completes the inspection and authorizes departure.
The FXE Federal Inspection Station
International arrivals at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport are processed at a dedicated U.S. Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Station. It is a separate government facility and is not the Tropic Air Charters departure hangar.
The aircraft is positioned on the inspection ramp. At FXE, passengers and crew are processed inside the facility, and all bags and personal items are brought in for inspection. Once CBP completes the process, passengers may depart directly from the inspection facility.

This is the government arrival facility identified in the current CBP airport fact sheet. Do not use this address as your outbound charter check-in location unless Tropic Air Charters specifically directs you there.
Prepare for Arrival
Private charter simplifies the journey, but it does not eliminate immigration, customs, agriculture, or import requirements. Tell the charter team about unusual items before departure so the crew can identify issues early.
Documents Ready
Keep each passenger's passport, visa or residency document, and any required child, pet, medical, or immigration paperwork accessible rather than packed deeply in baggage.
Receipts Together
Keep receipts for purchases and valuable items together. Accurate values and a clear explanation of what was purchased can make the declaration process easier.
Food Identified
Separate and identify food, plants, seeds, meat, fruit, vegetables, shells, animal products, and other agricultural items. All must be declared, even when packaged.
Special Items Disclosed
Advise Tropic Air Charters in advance about pets, commercial goods, firearms, large amounts of currency, medical items, restricted articles, or cargo requiring formal entry.
What Happens After Landing
The officer controls the actual sequence. Follow the crew's directions and do not assume that a previous arrival procedure will be identical on the next trip.
Aircraft Parks
The aircraft proceeds to the designated Federal Inspection Station ramp. Remain seated or in place until the crew gives instructions.
Items Removed
All luggage and personal belongings are taken off the aircraft and brought into the inspection facility as directed.
Documents Presented
Passengers present passports and other required entry documents and answer questions about identity, travel, purchases, and items carried.
Inspection Completed
CBP may examine baggage, purchases, food, animals, documents, currency, the aircraft, or other articles and may request additional information.
Passengers Released
After clearance is complete, passengers may leave the Federal Inspection Station and meet prearranged ground transportation.
What Passengers Must Disclose
Declaration is not the same as prohibition. Many items may be permitted after review, but failing to disclose an item can create delays, seizure, penalties, or other enforcement consequences.
Do not rely on whether an item was bought at a duty-free shop, is sealed, is intended as a gift, or appears harmless. Tell the officer what you are carrying and let CBP determine admissibility.
- Purchases and GiftsDeclare merchandise acquired abroad, including gifts, duty-free purchases, jewelry, artwork, electronics, souvenirs, and items intended for business or resale.
- Food and AgricultureDeclare meats, fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, shells, animal products, prepared foods, and other agricultural or wildlife-related items.
- Currency and Monetary InstrumentsAmounts exceeding $10,000 in currency or covered monetary instruments must be reported. For families or groups, the threshold applies to the collective total.
- Alcohol and TobaccoDeclare alcohol and tobacco products. Duty-free allowances and state restrictions vary and do not eliminate the obligation to report the items.
- Medication and Medical ProductsKeep medications in original labeled containers when possible and be prepared to explain prescriptions, medical devices, controlled substances, or products purchased abroad.
- Pets, Wildlife, and Animal ProductsPets, birds, fish, wildlife products, trophies, coral, shells, hides, feathers, and animal-derived souvenirs may require permits or inspection.
- Firearms and Restricted ArticlesFirearms, ammunition, knives, hunting equipment, hazardous articles, and regulated goods require advance disclosure and may require government authorization.
- Commercial Goods or CargoItems carried for a company, client, yacht, resort, resale, repair, exhibition, or delivery may require formal import entry, invoices, broker coordination, or separate cargo processing.
Tell Us Before the Return Flight
Some articles affect the arrival plan, aircraft handling, government notification, or paperwork. Advance notice is essential and acceptance is never automatic.
Import and Health Requirements
Animals may be subject to CBP, CDC, USDA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state, or other requirements. Carry all permits, veterinary records, microchip information, and entry documents required for the specific animal and travel history.
Passenger Baggage Is Not Always Cargo
Goods for resale, yacht provisioning, business delivery, repair, or commercial use may require invoices, importer information, a customs broker, duties, or a formal cargo entry. Arrange this before departure.
Reporting Is Mandatory
Transporting more than $10,000 is not automatically illegal, but it must be accurately reported. Valuable merchandise, precious-metal items, and purchases acquired abroad must also be declared as applicable.
Customs Clearance Is Not a Fixed-Time Service
CBP controls the inspection process. The number of passengers, documents, declarations, baggage, pets, cargo, aircraft ahead of yours, government staffing, and required secondary review can all affect the release time.
Do not schedule a commercial airline departure, meeting, car service, or other fixed commitment based only on the aircraft's planned landing time.
- Allow additional time for customs processing and ground travel from FXE.
- Tell your driver that release time may change and provide a passenger contact number.
- Do not ask a driver to enter a restricted inspection area.
- Use flexible or changeable onward reservations whenever practical.
- Tropic Air Charters cannot guarantee CBP processing or release time.

Do we clear Customs at the Tropic Air Charters hangar?
No. International arrivals at FXE are processed at the separate CBP Federal Inspection Station. The operating crew will take the aircraft to the designated inspection ramp.
Can I leave a bag on the aircraft?
Passengers should expect all bags and personal items to be removed and brought inside the FXE inspection facility. Follow the crew and officer's directions for every item.
How long does U.S. Customs clearance take?
There is no guaranteed passenger release time. Flight volume, staffing, documents, declarations, baggage, pets, cargo, and additional inspection can all affect the process.
Do duty-free purchases still have to be declared?
Yes. Merchandise acquired abroad should be declared even when purchased at a duty-free store. Keep receipts available and allow CBP to determine any applicable allowance or duty.
Should I declare food from The Bahamas?
Yes. Declare all food and agricultural items, including fruit, vegetables, meat, plants, seeds, soil, shells, and animal products. CBP determines whether each item may enter.
Is carrying more than $10,000 prohibited?
No, but currency and covered monetary instruments totaling more than $10,000 must be reported. For a family or group traveling together, the threshold applies to the collective total.
Can my driver meet me at the aircraft?
Drivers should remain outside restricted government areas and meet passengers only after CBP releases them. Coordinate the pickup location and flexible timing before travel.
What if I am carrying business goods or yacht provisions?
Tell Tropic Air Charters before departure. Commercial goods may require invoices, importer information, formal entry, duties, a customs broker, or separate cargo arrangements.
